All our courses, and the modules that make up our courses, are run by experts that have worked in the field covered by the course. So, our Supply Chain Crisis Management course has module tutors that are logistics professionals, that have run operations in high-pressure situations and dealt with emergencies and the unexpected. Our Cyber and Resilience courses are run by security professionals. Our experts have academic qualifications, but they are industry or sector professionals first.

Yes. We have a number of course start dates throughout the year and you can enroll on the one that best suits your timetable. You will be able to study, and do some online activities, with other learners at certain times during your course.

Yes. Our courses work extremely well for groups of learners from the same organization, who can discuss how our course content is relevant to their work. The tutors will work with the learners to tailor the content to the specific context of the employing organization.

I’m in the Armed Forces (or have recently left) and have learning credits. Can I use them to help pay for your courses?2020-07-30T20:15:28+00:00

Yes. Because our courses are accredited you can use your Standard Learning Credits and, because we are ELCAS registered, you can use your Extended Learning Credits as well.

Who is behind the Supply Chain Open Education Academy?2020-09-10T15:30:54+00:00

The organization behind the Academy is Goodwill Solutions CIC. Goodwill Solutions Community Interest Company is a multi-award-winning company providing a range of warehouse services, while also providing social impact through its work helping people, from all backgrounds, to start careers with the logistics sector. Based in Northampton, the company provides specialist logistics services to blue chip retailers and manufacturers.

The key people behind the Academy are:

Graham Tomkins, Co-Founder and Group CEO of Goodwill Holdings CIC

Graham is a successful entrepreneur with over thirty years experience in S.M.E. start-ups. He Co-Founded Goodwill Solutions CIC in 2008. The business was given the Royal seal of approval in April 2020 when it won the Queens Award for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunity. Graham firmly believes social enterprises can show us the future of what business can look like.

Liam Fassaam, Supply Chain Open Education Academy Co-Director

Liam is a thought leader, researcher and implementer of collaborative logistics and supply chain solutions that embrace a systems and social value view, supported with knowledge from a Military, Senior Management and Academic career spanning over 30 years. He is also engaged as the expert adviser to SeaFish (DEFRA) in the area of food supply chain, advises the European Commission on Food supply chain operations, supported the All-Party Sustainable Resource Group in Westminster on Circular Supply Chain and Food Security (APSRG), has advised to the Governments Office For Science, All-Party Parliamentary Freight transport group (APFT) and the Connected Places Catapult on Freight and transport futures. He has twice been awarded the title of ‘Global Social Media Influencer’ in the field of Supply Chain Management.

Simon Denny, Supply Chain Open Education Academy Co-Director

Simon served in the British Army from 1976 – 1986. He then joined Tesco where he was part of the team that redesigned training for the distribution branch. He moved into Higher Education in 1992 and worked for the University of Northampton until 2018, latterly as Executive Dean. At Northampton he specialized in designing bespoke development programmes for companies; three of his schemes won National Training Awards. In 2010 Simon gained The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion.

Yes, we are certain we are a ‘proper’ Academy. We are an officially approved Qualifi Accredited Centre. To become an approved Accredited Centre we had to go through a rigorous quality assurance process and submit lots of policies. Yes. The Supply Chain Open Education Academy’s courses are accredited. We are an approved Qualifi Accredited Centre.

We accredit our courses because we believe that unless we test learners to find out if they have achieved their learning objectives, we cannot guarantee that our courses will be useful to them. In addition, all the logistics companies we work with have told us that they want qualified people to work for them.

Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps people learn. When learners are able to see how they are doing on a course, they are able to determine whether or not they understand course material. Assessment can also help motivate learners. Assessment also helps the staff of the Supply Chain Open Education Academy. Frequent assessment allows us to see if our course material and teaching has been effective. Assessment also allows us to ensure learners learn what they need to know in order to meet the course’s learning objectives.

All our assessment tasks are designed to be relevant to the real-world operation of logistics businesses. Many of the tasks involve learners working together in small groups (either online or face-to-face), as they have to do in workplace situations. Our assessment tasks are also progressive, building on the previous one, and they can all be completed on-line.  We do not suddenly confront learners with the requirement to write a long essay!

Our courses are examples of ‘blended learning’. We have online content (reading, videos, links to key websites, activities and learning tasks), traditional reading (books still work really well!), and tutor-based sessions. The tutor-based sessions can be run face-to-face (classrooms still work as well!) or using a virtual system such as Zoom or Microsoft teams. We can also arrange work placements in logistics organizations for you when you have completed your course(s), if you wish. Work placements are a great way of really embedding your learning.

I am not based in the UK, can I still do your courses?2020-07-30T20:16:21+00:00

Yes, because our courses use online learning as well as tutor-run sessions, you can study our courses wherever you are in the world, as long as you have an internet connection. You can also download course content so you can continue studying if you move to an area without connectivity. The tutor-run sessions can be run using Zoom, Microsoft Teams or other system to ensure you get the best possible learning experience.
